hetalia-1hetalia-2Let us be honest: The two above images doesn’t match each other. And still they’re in the same anime. How did it come to that? This is my critique-ful-and-short-as-always essay about Hetalia Axis Powers, a supposed to be funny view of the World War I events, written after so long pause on LittleNeko.

The anime episodes of are each 5 minutes long is based, to say clearly, basically on prejudices. So e.g. the Italy-guy loves pasta more than his life. Funny? Some parts, yes, are funny, but I just can’t eliminate the feeling that I must not laugh at this. To be damn shortly, I can imagine why Korea forbade it. You can watch it, you can laugh, or rather smile a bit, but you must not wait for the episodes to air. It is not worth it.

  1. “I don’t know if it’s my exposure to many stereotypical and racial jokes or my ‘open’ nature…but I found nothing wrong with this anime.” — Open Your Mind

    Copy Pasta for the lazy!

  2. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.Terry Pratchett

    Suum cuique. It is my opinion, and yours is different, and it’s normal. The quote is irrelevant to the topic, but it could be a great tag-line for you blog, what do you think?

  3. Unfortunately the world is still full of racism.. and you know what people, on the most part still overlook it. Anyways I didn’t find Hetalia too racist for my taste but… it was kinda boring -_-;

  4. @Cokematic: Totally agree. The recent example is that the world celebrated a coloured president in the USA, instead of just giving it no importance. Funny that most people don’t notice it…

  5. Well, this anime is funny I must agree and I think it’s worth to watch =]
    Though I was to agree that is pretty weird one o.O

  6. Hetalia isn’t racist. Not at all. Racism is stereotyping based on race, in this case it’s based on country. In fact, according the highest definitions on Google, Racism is saying that one race is superior to another. Hetalia makes fun of every country. And, as many fans know, none of it is actually serious. The author doesn’t see an italian and think “Oh, there’s a pasta loving idiot.” Or look at americans and think “Oh. There’s a hamburger-loving idiot.” No. And neither do any of the fans that I know. It’s just silly stereotyping based on things that the country is famous for, things they’ve done in the past, and their relationships with other countries. Honestly, there’s nothing really offensive in it, I think. (But I’ve been told I have a pretty open mind in terms of offensive material)
    So it’s okay to laugh at it or wait for episodes. Unless you made that judgement thinking it’s just a crappy show regardless. XD

    I don’t know if you or anyone reading this truly thinks/thought it is/was a racist show or not, but I’m just voicing my opinion. :3

  7. Agreement with Melzai. :) And I, on the other hand, don’t have an open mind in terms of offensive material. -wry- But I’m used to grinning at my own country’s stereotypes.

  8. It kind of annoys me when anime is 5 minutes long, regardless of how good it may or may not be. This doesn’t catch my interest though either way.

  9. Little Neko Reviews » Hetalia Axis Powers: First Impressions great article thank you.

  10. guzel paylasim tesekkurler

  11. well in all it being racist my friend right one the show can put a smile on my face awww cute italy but to put all in facts what the title stand for the title stand for useless italy why ? and also they make every country week but japan is strong and barley looses in the anime im saying this show a bit racist and it should be band let hope it is band in the USA lol even though we do love hambugers

  12. Lily, that doesn’t make it racist! Japan is NOT the only country in that show that is strong, lol, so is every other one of them! This anime is meant to be for FUN! I take no offense that my country, America, is seen as eating hamburgers all the time. lol I can’t believe people get so worked up over this! You don’t see Russia getting all huffy that there country is portrayed as a cruel child-like personality that beats up on poor Latvia! Just go with the flow and enjoy! And the reason it’s 5 minutes, is because this IS originally a web-comic! I love the web-comic more, but the show always makes me giggle.

    Just putting in my thoughts. Found this since I have decided it to be my topic for my college Argumentative essay! X3
